I got this bottle from a Petro Canada for $3.79 along with the Tropic Thunder and Manic Melon ones.

Taste

Mean Green smells and tastes like a limeade. A better way to describe it would be a flat lemon-lime soda drink that has sat out a bit too long and some of the water had evaporated thus making it a tiny bit sweeter than it should be. But the lemon near the finish helps cut the sweetness down to a more manageable level and leaves your mouth feeling fairly refreshing.

This flavor is nothing unique, but its non-carbonated nature makes it very easy to drink, especially when you are thirsty and tired.

Energy

As with all the other Hydros, there are 138 mg of caffeine in the bottle. The effects are also similar, which is why I will recycle some words here.

I started to feel the effects within 10 minutes, which manifested themselves through a mild shaky leg. Damn those sugars (25 grams in the bottle by the way). The rest of the energy started coming in another 10 minutes later with my mind clearing up from the morning fog and me getting the urge to go down to the gym. The kick was fairly clean and lasted for almost 2 hours.
This is my second flavor of the Monster Hydro line-up. I got all of them from a Petro-Canada gas station for $3.79 per bottle. Check out my review of the Tropic Thunder.

Taste

This smells both amazing and with a hint of some dangerous chemical. The first whiff is of a red Jolly Rancher but if you smell it a bit too long, you get an odd chemical/medicinal scent. Just take short whiffs or don't pour this into a glass.

The taste is a similar blend of awesomeness and danger. It starts off watery, but as the beverage travels along the tongue, the flavors intensify and it does taste at times like a red Jolly Rancher. I also got dried fruits towards the end, which kicked this up a notch. Buuuut, I also tasted a short-lived plastic flavor as if the bottle was left in the Sun for a bit too long. I enjoyed the flavor, but overall, the scent and the odd bits of flavor lost some points.

I have been admiring this one for months over at the energy drink subreddit and now it is finally in Canada! I got this from 7-11 where there are having a promotion on these - 2 for $6. Usually they are running closer to $4 each.

Taste

This Mango Loco has an orange color and it is very hazy, like a mango nectar with club soda. The aroma is incredible with a ton of mango but also a bit of tangerine and orange. The mouthfeel is thick and the taste is very similar to Monster's Khaos and Anti-Gravity but heavier on the mango while the orange/tangerine notes are more towards the end. And there is even a tiny bit of guava that develops in the aftertaste once you have a few sips.

The mango flavor is comparable to a fresh, thick mango nectar and it is equally sweet. Pretty good overall flavor but nothing to get excited about over.

Energy

There are 151 mg of caffeine in the can and 55 grams of sugar which is what gets you going and gives you a jittery rush right away. The caffeine kicks in 30 or so minutes later and lasts for 2 - 2.5 hours. Pretty standard for such a drink.

Red Bull Organics are a new line of soft drinks, not energy drinks like I thought. I found all of them (4 at the time of this review) at a local 7-11 where they were having a sale of 2 for $4.

Simply Cola

For those who remember, Red Bull actually already made a "Simply Cola" almost 10 year ago. My review is here. I believe this is either the same formula or one that is very close because both cola's state that the caffeine in the drink is extracted from coffee beans. Unfortunately the old Simply Cola did not state the caffeine content so I have no way of comparing the two in that department. This one has 32 mg, which is fairly comparable to a regular can of Coke.

Flavor-wise, both are very similar, if not the same. It has been almost 10 years since I last had the first Simply Cola so I am relying solely on my old review. This version also has notes of lemon, vanilla, cinnamon, and other spices, in addition to your typical cola flavors. The immediate finish is citrusy and sharp, but there are lingering spice notes that I really like.

Overall, pretty good twist on your standard cola flavor but the citrus twist may not appeal to Coke lovers.

Taste - 8.5/10

Ginger Ale

This ginger ale has a very gingery aroma but it isn't as gingery as expected. In fact, the lemon is a bit overpowering towards the finish. Interesting twist on ginger ale, but I think I would have liked to be a bit more intense a little less lemony.

Taste - 6/10

Tonic Water

I can see how Simply Cola and Ginger Ale could be part of the Red Bull family, but this Tonic Water is a complete departure from the regular line up. More so because the choice of flavor just doesn't math anything else that is Red Bull.

On its own, the tonic water is not great but not horrible. The aroma is sweet, like candy. The flavor is lacking at first but then develops into more of a sweet, rather than bitter soda. Sure, there is a moment of bitterness, but it goes away rather quickly and all you are left with is more sweetness and a tiny bit of citrus. The mouthfeel is also sticky and creamy, rather than sharp and bitey. It needs more of an edge.

Taste - 6/10

Bitter Lemon

This one has a very refreshing and full lemon flavor up front with a delayed light bitter finish. If you take frequent sips, you won't even get the bitterness because that's how long it takes to emerge. If you are afraid of it being too bitter, don't be. The bitterness is short-lived and light enough for most to enjoy it.

Overall, this is a very refreshing flavor and is my favorite of the bunch.

Finally a new product from the US made its way across the border. I spotted all of the new Monster Hydro flavors at a Petro Canada gas station and bought them all. There were no special deals at the time so I paid $3.79 per bottle.

So what is Monster Hydro? This, essentially is Monster's delayed response to Vitamin Water. The label talks about all the waters that are available to you and how this is a lightly sweetened version to give you a boost.

Energy

First off, this Tropic Thunder smells incredible! It is a mix of various citrus fruits and mango. The label led me to believe this would be a slightly sweetened, and lightly flavored water, but in fact, this tastes a lot like something from the Rehab line. The flavors are light to medium at first, but intensify towards the middle of each sip and end on a strong note, leaving lots to linger.

The flavors start off with the citrus, but the mango moves in quickly which is then followed by a bit of pineapple. The citrus comes back towards the end and join with the mango to give you a refreshing aftertaste. The label is right about the sweetness level, though. There is just enough of it to compliment the flavors, but not enough to build up to astronomical levels like some other sugary energy drinks...some Monster ones included.

I loved this flavor, especially in combination with the non-carbonated nature of this beverage. I found myself consuming this bottle very quickly because not only was it a good thirst quencher, but also the flavors were good.

Energy

There are 138 mg of caffeine in this 550 mL bottle, which is on the low end, but still enough to give you a nice kick.

No crash at the end because this was early in the morning and I had plenty of sleep.

This is Red Bull's first Winter Edition that I have seen...or at least the first Winter Edition that managed to make its way to Canada. Since its recent release, you can find this one almost everywhere Red Bull cans are sold. I got mine from a Mac's.

Taste

Surprisingly the liquid has the same purple hue as the can. The aroma is sweet and reminds me of cream soda. The taste also starts off like a cream soda, but a moderately sour fruity twist appears within moments. The sourness is definitely similar to plums (mostly unripe Damsons) but the fruitiness reminds me more of wine gummies mixed with ume, and a subtle, yet easily recognizable Red Bull cough syrup note. So I guess the "twist" must refer to the variety of plums this drink is trying to imitate.

In any case, I liked this Red Bull's unique new flavor, but I can't say I loved it too much.

Energy

There are 114 mg of caffeine in the can and its effects are similar to any other 355 mL can of Red Bull - fairly quick energy kick with jitters, followed by 1.5 hours, or so, of a ton of energy.
Orange Pineapple

I actually reviewed the US version of this a few years ago. This one is a little different and not in a good way. The US one had an amazing, intense aroma with a ton of fruits and vegetables, while this one has a more subdued one that reminds me more of a cheap soft drink than a fruit-packed beverage.

The flavor is a little different too. The tea and artificial sweetener (rebiana, a stevia leaf extract) are much more pronounced to the point where the sweetener is pretty much the aftertaste. The orange flavor is subtle to light while the pineapple barely comes through.

Not as big of a fan of this one as I was of the US version. I used to buy it and drink it by the 6-pack.

Taste - 6.5/10

Raspberry Grape

The aroma on this one is amazing, but the flavor is very sweetener and green tea heavy which almost completely decimates any berry and grape flavors. I say almost, because there is still a light raspberry undertone at the start and a subtle grape note towards the finish that lingers in the aftertaste...and that's it.

I think this will be better sold as a rebranded V8 Green Tea flavored beverage.

Taste - 5/10

Energy

These V8s performed like all other V8 energy drinks so I will recycle some old text to describe these - the effects if these 80 mg cans are not as intense as a can of Red Bull since there are only 10 grams of sugar, but you still get a brief sugar rush within 10-15 minutes. I did not experience any jitters and even felt focused for a bit. When the caffeine kicked, it gave me about 1.5 hours of energy which slowly went away without any drama.

Summer is here and so is the latest Red Bull Summer Edition. This year the flavor is coconut twist.

Taste

I thought this would pour hazy white. but it actually has a hazy blue color, much like a blue curacao. It has the familiar Red Bull smell, but here it is turned down a notch and complimented by a light coconut scent.

The taste is surprisingly good with a light coconut flavor all throughout each sip. The familiar Red Bull taste doesn't come until the end and gives this Summer Edition more of a finishing twist than a main flavor.

Overall, this reminds me of a light tropical cocktail more than an energy drink. It is a refreshing new idea which actually tastes pretty good.

The new Rockstar Super Sours have finally arrived in Canada!!! Well, 2 new flavors have arrived - strawberry and orange. I got both from a Shoppers Drug Mart for $3.79 each.

Taste

I use Jolly Ranchers as a comparison tool on multiple occasions, but this drink has to have the closest Jolly Rancher pink color I have ever seen. It is as if they struck a deal with the company to use their candy colorant.

The smell is amazing - fresh strawberries and a tiny bit of candy-like sweet roundness. The taste is also amazing. It starts off like strawberry jam and transitions to a fresh, slightly tart strawberry before giving way to a candy-sweet strawberry. Despite the "Super Sour" label, this is not a sour energy drink. There is a spike of tartness, but it is nothing compared to the Green Apple released a few years ago. But I loved it!

Energy

The typical 160 mg of caffeine are present in this can and the energy effects are identical to any other Rockstar. The initial kick is fast and the sourness helped it even more. I drank this can quickly and yes, I did experience some jitters, but I was ready for it.

The rest of the boost is standard - jitters die down, caffeine kicks in and makes you feel like you want to run around the room for the next few hours. The end was clean without drama (i.e. a crash).

This is the second of the new Super Sours that made their way to Canada. The first was the strawberry one, which I loved! Both I got from a Shoppers Drug Mart.

Taste

This one smells and tastes almost like your standard orange soda. The only difference is the short spike in sourness mid way through each sip, which adds a bit to the character. This didn't feel as sour to me as the first batch of Super Sours, but it might feel sour to some.

Overall, not a bad tasting energy drink, but it is nothing unique.

I find it odd that I was able to find a ton of these sugar free Purple Editions but no regular sugary ones. Does Red Bull not make/sell a sugary version of this? The Internet (at the time of this review) doesn't seem to provide any useful info. Anyways, on with the review.

Taste

Inside this purple can you will find a cranberry red liquid which looks like a darker version of the Red Edition. The aroma is absolutely amazing with a ton of rich berry notes. The taste is equally impressive for a sugar free drink. The starts of very rich and doesn't go away at all. It seems to stick to the inside of the mouth and just gets better with each sip. But that also allows the sweetness to build up very quickly. Despite this being a sugar free drink, there is a ton of sweetness but fortunately the sweetener aftertaste is minimal and doesn't manifest itself for a while.

Overall, I absolutely love this flavor, but I wish the sweetness was dialed down a notch.

Energy

There are 114 mg of caffeine in this can and the effects are like any other sugar free Red Bull. If you haven't a sugar free Red Bull, the effects can also be compared to the sugary Red Bull minus the jitters you get from sugar.

This is another Rockstar I picked up from the US. As of this post, the only Revolt flavors available in Canada are Killer Citrus and Killer Grape.

Taste

Right off the bat, this is unlike anything else I have seen. The color of this energy drink is so intensely purple and red that it resembles a dark red wine than a cherry flavored energy drink. The aroma is also unique with deep jammy notes of cherry skins and ripe flesh. Amazing!

But then the flavor snaps me back to reality and realigns this beverage with my preconceived expectations. Unfortunately the flavor is a much sweeter version of a regular cherry energy drink without much of the lushness the aroma hinted at. Yes, there is a note of cherry skins somewhere, but it gets easily lost beneath the sugary profile. And speaking of sugary profile, the sweetness builds up very quickly and a quarter of a can I was in search of a water source to cleanse my palate. Oh boy...

Energy

There are 240 mg of caffeine and 68 grams of sugar in this can. Both of these will give you a very nice kick that will last for a few hours but will come with a crash. I had this first thing in the morning so my crash was a mild one, but if you were to have this later on in the day, be ready to feels its after-effects.

Finally an "energy drink" you can get in Canada! I found this can, and other Kicking Horse cold brews, at the local Independent City Mart (owned by the LobLaws company). I should point out that if you cannot find these cold brews, try looking for the Kicking Horse Smart Ass coffee and make your own. The coffee beans used for this cold brew are widely available, including at places like WalMart.

Taste

The aroma is sweet with subtle notes of spices and chocolate. The flavor is layered and amazing. It starts off light and a touch sweet, but very quickly subtle notes of cinnamon and nutmeg emerge, which are followed by intense flavors of chocolate and finally, very bright coffee. The profile starts light but within seconds transitions to a more intense one, leaving lots of lingering coffee and chocolate finishing notes. Excellent!

Energy

The can does not say how much caffeine is in the can, but I would guess that it is a bit more than a cup of coffee since cold brews tend to have a bit more caffeine. I got a very nice buzz going for a couple of hours without any jitters or the urge to run in circles. The energy was very well controlled and it did not interfere with any mental tasks I was performing.

Finally, a new energy drink in Ontario! I got this Monster Ultra Violet from the local Mac's during their "new Monster" promotion for $2.

Taste

This Monster has a light purple color that reminds me a lot of Gatorade Rain, or one of their other lines where the colors are a little lighter/diluted. The small is very unique with notes of concord grapes and berries. The taste is very interesting blend of the aroma and its looks. The taste starts off with sweet candy-like flavor that resembles those mystery berry gummies you can get anywhere, but then transitions to a cleaner, purple/blue Gatorade-like flavor before trailing off into the distance and leaving lingering some mystery berry notes. Also, the aftertaste sweetness starts building up quickly after a few sips.

A wild ride, this one is. I really loved some parts and I thought others were a bit too sweet. In any case, I always enjoy trying a new Monster.

Energy

Monster energy drinks in Canada are not very exciting and this one is not different with its 140 mg of caffeine. And believe it or not, but at 140 mg of caffeine per 473 mL can, this Monster has a lower concentration of caffeine per mL than Red Bull!!!! This one clocks at just below 0.30 mg/mL, while a small can of Red Bull sits at 0.32mg/mL.

Besides the surprise twist in concentration, the effects are very similar to the other Monster Ultras, except the kick doesn't last just as long. But I still got a nice couple of hours out of it.

I found this at a Target on a recent trip south of the border. As of this moment, this is not sold in Canada.

So what makes 1893 such a different Pepsi? Well, it is made with real sugar, kola nut and some bitters....so kind of like the hipster colas you can buy.

But hipster jokes aside, this Pepsi has a hell of a flavor! From the get go you are bombarded by various spices, including a generous helping of cinnamon and some coffee. A similar level of sweetness is present, but with the 1893, it is much rounder and doesn't stick to the inside of the mouth. The aftertaste is rather pleasant too with hints of spices and a touch of candy-like sweetness.

Definitely go for this one over the regular one if you had the option...unless you really, really like the regular one, or you are not a fan of cinnamon.

I bought this from a Target when travelling to Michigan for a couple of dollars. This is not sold in Canada...yet I want to say but who knows.

Taste

Well, it smells like a lemonade and tastes like one mixed with a tiny bit of Mountain Dew. That is the short description, but to be a bit more detailed, I need to note that the lemon part tastes like a real lemon towards the end of each sip. I don't know if Mountain Dew has almost found the perfect substitute, or if there is real lemon juice, but for a few moments it feels like you are sucking on a sugar-coated lemon which I found pleasing. The aftertaste is also very refreshing and pleasant.

This is a very well executed lemonade. Not sure about the prickly pear cactus juice, though. I have never had it on its own so not sure what flavor to look for. But to be honest, the tart lemonade overpowers all other flavors.

Energy

There are 72 mg of caffeine in this can and the effects are very similar to a small can of Red Bull, except for the ever so slightly reduced jitters. Or maybe that was because I took my time consuming this 473 mL can.

This is the second of my La Colombe flavors and damn does it pour with a stunning color and consistency!

Taste

On the nose, this latte is very sweet and the vanilla notes come through with ease. The moderately sweet start lends itself to the bitterness of coffee within moments...but I like it. The coffee flavor is bold without feeling burnt or overpowering as it still allows the vanilla to lurk underneath it. The finish is like a freshly made latte with notes of coffee, some sour milk and a touch of vanilla. Also, there isn't much of a sugary build up.

Energy

There are 110 mg of caffeine in the can and they are delivered better than an equivalent sugary drink. The 16 grams of sugar are enough to give you a quick boost at the start until the caffeine gets absorbed. There are no jitters and the energy is clean for about one and a half hours. Also, there is no crash at the end.
I got this Rockstar Blackout from a Target when I was visiting the US. Unfortunately this is not sold in Canada. Edit - as of 2018, this can be also found in Canada.

Taste

This smells and looks like a regular Rockstar and it tastes almost like one too. I found this one to be a bit creamier with a rounder, candy-like sweetness profile. The finish also has a sour twist giving the aftertaste some crispness.

Energy

There are 160 mg of caffeine making this a fairly standard energy drink in every way. I got a sugary buzz/jitters within 10-15 minutes of drinking it and within another 20 or so minutes I was wired and ready to run around. The buzz lasted for just over 2 hours and I did not experience a crash because I did have plenty of sleep and consumed this first thing in the morning.
Guys! I found the Acai version of the 28 Black energy drink I tried a few months ago. Big whoop. But OK, I am a tiny bit excited to try it.

Taste

This red-colored energy drink smells soooo good. It is like berry candy with a tart acai twist. It tastes like it too!!! Well, only at the end. The start is a little wobbly from all the carbonation as your tongue is assaulted, but the acai notes are the first thing to hit your tongue once the bubbles disappear. They are intense and a little tart, but get progressively sweeter to reach the candy-like end I mentioned.

Beneath the acai berries lurks the base of the regular 28 Black energy drink, which is 75% Red Bull, but more rounder and creamier. The acai is a great complimentary flavor that makes the overall taste stand out as more unique than other energy drinks.

After months of slacking off on publishing the 28 Black Acai review, fate brought me an Acai Zero as soon as that review went up.

Taste

This bright pink beverage has an amazing and intense aroma that fills the air around it within 30-40 cm radius. The main difference between this and the regular Acai is that this aroma has a subtle earthy note. And the differences don't stop at the aroma. The mouthfeel is not creamy at all and it is actually much, much thinner here. The candy-like sweetness has been replaced by a sharp citric note that covers the flavors all throughout and you get nothing until the very end. The finish is dry, crisp, relatively clean with only tiny hints of any fruits.

Stick to the sugary one. That was is awesome.

I had some work in the US not too long ago and on the way out I stopped at a Target...and it was awesome. In Canada, it is a huge thing when a new energy drink comes out, but it seems like there is a constant trickle of products south of the border (the Canadian border that is) La Colombe is a brand that is completely new to me so I picked up as many of their products as I could fine. The Draft Latte is the first of the reviews.

Taste

First off, I love the silky smooth texture, color, and frothy top of this beverage. The aroma is nothing to write home about as it resembles any other canned latte/coffee. But the flavor...oh boy! I was expecting a sugary iced coffee, but instead I got a latte with barely any sugar in it. I was not prepared. This taste like something you would get in a coffee shop that knows what they are doing - a shot (actually should be 2) of espresso with steamed milk and no added sugar. There is a hint of sweetness, though. And there are 11 grams of sugar in the can, but there is no actual added sugar so it must come from one of the primary ingredients.

The actual coffee flavor is great too. It is light and smooth and doesn't hit you until the very end. Up until then the flavors are balanced well with the milk. This is great!

Energy

There are 120 mg of "natural caffeine" in the can. I think the company really wants to make sure the consumers knows that there are no chemical additions that boost the caffeine levels.

The effects are like with any latte with little no to sugar. The kick comes in later but there are no jitters or a crash and you get a nice buzz for at least an hour and a half to two hours.

I am guessing The Summer Edition has become an annual line-up changer for Red Bull because this is the third different flavor of Summer Edition I have seen in Canada in the last 3 years. There was the yellow one in 2014 and the green one in 2016. And now...Mr. Pink.

Taste

First off the contents of this can are just a shade lighter than the color of the label. Its insides smell like liquefied sugar, grapefruit (actually this one is awesome) and lemonade....so like a super sweet pink lemonade. The taste is similar but starts off with almost no flavor with citrus being quite predominant towards the end. The finish is heavy on the grapefruit with a long-lingering refreshing afternote, which I really enjoyed.

But overall, the taste is all over the place so I am not sure how to feel about this new Pink Grapefruit Summer Edition. It sure is refreshing but so is freshly squeezed lemon sugary water....aka lemonade.

Energy

The kick is as expected of Red Bull with the can packing the typical 114 mg of caffeine. Not much to say here.

A box of Reize was sent to me for a review all the way from Australia. You can't purchase Reize in stores, but you can get a monthly subscription to satisfy your caffeine needs.

Taste

First off, Reize doesn't dissolve as easily as other instant drinks. I had to go back to stirring a few times until all of the powder was gone from the bottom. But once the powder has been properly dissolved the end result is a clear, Red Bull-like mixture. It even smells like it.

The flavor is unlike anything I was expecting...in a veeeery good way. It is a mix between cola, gummy bears and just a distant hint of Red Bull-like berries. Love it! This has to be one of the most unique flavors I have ever tried. There are no weird off-flavors, or artificial sweetener notes, or caffeine bitterness...it is just sweet cola, gummy bears, and some of the familiar Red Bull with an interesting cane sugar-like round finish. Even the sweetness is well balanced and does not build up. I am surprised by how much flavor there is in such a small sachet of instant drink. Amazing!

Energy

Each sachet contains 50 mg of caffeine which is on the low end of the energy spectrum, but because there are multiple sachets, there is nothing stopping you from using multiple for a stronger kick...except common sense. After all, this is still an energy product so you should be careful.

One sachet is enough to give a short burst of uncontrollable energy. When I had one first thing in the morning, my mind was racing within 15-20 minutes and I was ready to run around in circles. Unfortunately for me, I had to do some paperwork at the time. The energy was way too rough for mental tasks, but this is perfect for physical exercise.

About a month ago without any fanfare, Nescafe introduced a couple of iced coffees in cans to the Canadian market. I originally came across these at a WalMart and have yet to see them elsewhere.

Taste

Out of the can, the original Nescafe looks like any other canned iced coffee. The only distinguishing feature is the bolder coffee aroma.

The flavor is watery at first but builds up a tiny bit after a couple of sips. The mouthfeel is thin and doesn't change. Normally the added milk bulks up the mouthfeel, but whatever has been added to this coffee doesn't do a good job.

If you ignore the watery nature of the flavor, the coffee part is very decent. Once the flavors build up a bit, you can tell that the coffee that was used for this drink is of a good calibre. The only problem is that more should have been used.

Energy

There is no mentioning of caffeine content, but I would guess that it falls somewhere in the 80 to 100 mg range. After 15-20 minutes I started to feel awake and even a bit focused despite feeling a wave of jitters coming. Another 10-15 minutes I was feeling rather energized and ready for physical activities. The kick lasted for about 1.5 - 2 hours and finished without any drama.

I was finally able to find a stash of the new Marley One Drop coffees. Every since I saw and tried the new Vanilla Swirl, I have been obsessing over the other new flavors. And now I found it when I walked into a Bulk Barn looking for baking yeast. Awesome stuff!

Taste

Oh man, I cannot describe how good this smells to me and what fond memories this smell brings back. This smells like a mix between banana split (duh), deep fried banana covered in chocolate, chocolate-covered banana ice cream on a stick, and chocolate-covered banana puffs (those might be more European). What I am trying to say is that it definitely smells like what I was expecting.

The taste is well balanced and no particular flavor is dominant, but you can taste them all. The banana flavor is mild but present from the start to the end, while the chocolate comes in just a bit after the banana, but lingers well into the aftertaste. The coffee comes out near the end.

The aftertaste is sweet. This One Drop gets really sweet towards the end and each sip adds another layer of sweetness. So be aware if you are not into sweet stuff. I don't like sweet things all that much, but I really enjoyed it because of the memories it brought back.

Energy

There is no indication as to how much caffeine is in the can, but based on my experience with this one, and the Vanilla Swirl, I would guesstimate that it is around the 100 - 120 mg range.

The effects of this one are the same as the Vanilla Swirl - a delayed uptake, followed by a brief jittery period, followed by 2 hours of energy.
