Cheetah Power Surge Energy Drink Review

I have been looking for the Cheetah energy drinks for such a long time and I have finally found one. Granted it wasn't the red one I was especially after, but it will have to do. I got this from a newspaper stand at a local mall for $2.99 CAD.

There are a couple of unusual things I noticed about this drink. The first, and most obvious one, was that the label is glued on. I have never seen a 473 mL drink with a glued on label. The second one is the amount of sodium this contains - 520 mg, which is 22% of the recommended daily value. In comparison the can contains only 40g of sugar, which is 2 less than the standard 355 mL can of Coke. Compare the sodium to that found in a 355 mL bottle of Gatorade - 143mg. This is such a huge amount of sodium, but I still cannot wait to try it.

Surprisingly the drink is cloudy and pale yellow, almost beige, in color. The taste is surprisingly good and free of any medicinal tones. The sodium can be noticed towards the end of each gulp but not in the sense that it makes the taste salty, but it leaves a distinct feeling on your tongue. Unfortunately as I continued to consume the beverage, the taste started to go bad. The tropical fruit taste started to disappear and a slightly sour royal jelly taste started to emerge, a taste which I don't usually enjoy. I poured the last third of the can into a mug and noticed that there are a lot of yellow particles swimming around. It doesn't say anywhere to shake the can before opening, but it might be a good idea to do so. Remember that the drink is slightly carbonated. The taste did not improve with the last bit, it remained mostly royal jelly with some distant notes of tropical fruits.

The words "Caffeine Free" can be easily seen on the label and that is all I am going to say about caffeine. However, there are several types of ginseng extracts in the drink which will give you a boost of energy. About 20 minutes after consuming most of the drink I started to feel energized. The feeling was similar to the one I usually get from a caffeinated beverage, but there are no jitters with this one. Unfortunately the buzz lasted for about an hour and then I was back to feeling tired.

Scores:
Cost - $2.99 CAD for a 473 mL can
Taste - 7.8/10 at first, but drops to a 6/10 for an average of 6.9/10
Energy - 6/10

Overall - 12.9/20...pretty good energy boost for a caffeine free energy drink

  2. Everyday at work I use to drink a cup of coffee around 3:00 pm to help me get through the rest of the day. Then one day someone brought in some Cheetah (the red one) I tried it, I liked it, and now I have been drinking Cheetah for about a year. I like it and it works!

  5. I have been seeing commercials for this drink on Tv for awhile now, and I finally found some at my local Shoppers Drug Mart. I bought the same red fruit flavor as you did and I must say this has to be the MOST DISGUSTING ENERGY DRINK I HAVE EVER TASTED! I will never buy this again how this company stays in business is beyond me. I couldn't even get through half the can before pouring it down the drain.

  7. Worst piece of dirty shit ever. I went to get an energy drink in the morning and I saw cheetah was 2 for $3. Upon opening it, it smelled and tasted disgusting. I am a lover of all energy drinks but this one belongs in the drain. Oh also about 25 minutes after chugging that disgusting thing back I fell asleep at my desk. Keep this shit out of stores! It's nasty, it doesn't work, it's name is stupid, it's label is stupid, the CEO is a dingy freak.... and THAT'S no bull!

  8. Where can I purchase Cheetah Power Surge Blueberry? I've looked all over with no luck. Shoppers carries the standard red can, but no sign of Blueberry anywhere. I see ads for it all the time???

  14. I live in Detroit, MI and watch Hockey Night in Canada every weekend, so I've seen commercials for this stuff hundreds of times. It finally crossed the border, so I picked up a can for $1.00 on sale.

    Awful Awful stuff.

You can literally taste the salt in it, and it has a terribly sweet/bitter quality which is spot on with what I would imagine Kool-Aid might taste like if you only used half the water to mix it.

I fully regret my purchase and I'm just glad I didn't buy both flavors.

  15. Yes it is tangy but if you like that, then you will like this drink. It has less sugar than alot of pops but I think it could do with less salt. Cheers

  22. Aside from the high sodium content, it's not a bad drink. At least it's a caffeine-free alternative energy drink. From experience, it does provide a temporary energy boost albeit not a long lasting one.
