AMP Energy Lightning Review

Holy yellow cans Batman...this can is YELLOOOW!!! I was going down one of the isles in 7-11, headed for the coolers, when this can just JUMPED at me. I think that Monster and AMP are trying some new tricks to get the customer's attention. I have never seen this AMP flavour before, only the 5 most common ones - regular, Overdrive, Elevate, Traction and Reignite(Relaunch). Of course there are the AMP energy with green/black tea ones, which are still not as common, but I have seen them in stores. A quick wikipedia search reveals that there are, in fact, 3 more flavours - Lightning, Defend and Sugar Free. OK, the last one isn't so much a flavour as sugar free regular AMP. Although, I am sure that he sugar free does not taste very good.

The can is not the only thing that is screaming yellow, the beverage itself is also bright yellow. It is not completely clear, it is a bit foggy, kind of like a Lifesaver or any lemon drop. It tastes a lot like a carbonated Minute Maid lemonade with a slight tangerine undertone. The immediate aftertaste is lemony-sour, which after a minute gives way to a generic, cough syrup-like taste with hints of lemon/citric acid and sugar. The taste is definitely different from other energy drinks. Having this on a hot day (like today) can have its refreshing advantages. Another thing, the taste gets better with time.

The energy content is listed at 158 mg per can, which is a bit less than the other AMPs, but not by a significant amount. Like all the other ones, this one offers a decent energy boost, both from the caffeine and the sugar, which for me lasted for several hours.

Scores:
Cost - $2.99 CAD
Taste - 7.2/10
Energy - 7.5/10

Overall - 14.7/20...it is different and refreshing
