Starbucks Refreshers Orange Melon Energy Drink Review
This summer Starbucks introduced their line of drinks called "Refreshers" to the Canadian market. What those are are refreshing beverages made with lemonade or berries that contain green coffee extract. You cannot taste the coffee, but you still got a kick out of it. This can is essentially (at least I believe it is) a canned version of the same type of beverage, which of course is not yet sold in Canada.
Taste
This Refresher is refreshing. Yeah, I know, cheesy, but it is true. It has a light fruit taste with orange up front and melon trailing closely behind. And drinking this first thing in the morning or when you are feeling thirsty is a fantasticly refreshing.
The taste is not too sweet either. In fact there is a subtle lingering bitterness in the aftertaste which at first is noticeable for a moment, but later on it blends in with the mellow melon aftertaste. After a while the aftertaste develops this sweetener taste, which I am not sure where it comes from since I cannot locate any sweeteners on the ingredients list. It could be a combination of some of the other ingredients that results in this. The taste did bother me a bit, but I got used to it.
For Canadians, the taste reminds me a little of the lighter tasting President's Choice sparkling drinks that are sold in packs of 4.
Energy
There is no indication of exactly how much caffeine is in the can, but an article on these says there are between 40 and 55 mg of caffeine per can. Not much, but for some might be enough for a short burst of energy. I had one first thing in the morning so I felt the immediate effects within 20 minutes and felt generally more awake, focused and just felt ready to do thing.
Of course this didn't last long since I am so used to a cup of coffee in the morning or a proper energy drink, but I definitely recommend these for the flavour if you are looking for a short burst of energy or are sensitive to caffeine (not too sensitive that is).
Scores:
Cost - $2.69
Taste - 8.2/10
Energy - 5.5/10
Overall - 13.7/20...refreshing drink for a short lasting burst of energy if you are a caffeine addict, plenty if you don't regularly drink coffee or energy drinks
